2022 Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Flyer covering events in New York from May through August

The New York Soil Health Working Group and the New York Soil Health Initiative announce the 2022 Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Field Day Series. Running from May-August, the statewide series can be found from Long Island to Western NY, Northern NY, and Central and Eastern NY. Download flyer.

 

“In collaboration with local farmers and partners, we are delivering region-specific information on current challenges and advancements in soil health practices,” said Deborah Aller, extension associate with the Cornell Soil Health Program.

 

Online registration is required for all events. A few events will have a small registration fee to support costs associated with the event.

 

The agenda will include:

  • Using Soil health to increase Weather Resilience
  • Managed cover crops in strip-tilled organic vegetables
  • Strip tillage of pumpkins (in field) and cover crops (in field)
  • Soil Health Demonstration with the Soil Health Trailer
  • Farmer panel on experiences using reduced tillage techniques for vegetables

This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is preferred by 7/20/22 to help ensure there is enough food. Walk-ins are welcome.

 

Credits offered: DEC Certified Pesticide Applicator Recertification credits have been requested.

3:00 pm –3:30 pm: Using Soil Health to Increase Weather Resilience-Elizabeth Marks, NRCS biologist
3:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Managing cover crops in strip-tilled organic vegetables-Ryan Maher, Cornell Small Farms Program
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm:  Farmer Panel – John Altobelli (Altobelli Family Farm)
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Soil Health Demonstration, Cover crop plots, and Pumpkin Strip tillage Demo-Joseph Amsili and Michael Glos (NYSH)
6:00 pm – 7:00 pm dinner

 

Scholarships are available for veterans that reside in the states of New York or New Jersey. This scholarship supports a veteran’s attendance to one of the nine field days being offered in the months of July and August 2022. Veterans may request reimbursement for mileage and registration fees in addition to a $100 participation stipend to offset other related costs. More info.
